Unable to expand folders. You do not have appropriate permissions

I do a bit of IT consulting on the side. I suggested this program to a client, and set them up about a year ago. Everything was working well until recently.

Due to time issues, when the problem first occured, they contacterd another IT guy. At this point, they have a Windows 2003 server running the Server side, with Outlook 2003.

They have 4 clients running Outlook 2007, and one running Outlook 2003.

2 of the 2007 clients could initially connect fine (both members of the Admins group, so thats no shock) I configured DCOM to get around the "unable to access Server" problem as detailed elsewhere in these forums. Now, one additional 2007 client can connect fine. The other 2007 and the singel 2003 client can both connect, but experience "unable to expand the folder. You do not have the appropriate permissions to perform this action" error when I try to expand the PublicShare folder in outlook.

The newly enabled 2007 client and the 2 that still don't work, are all part of the same set of user groups, and all have identical permissions in DCOM, the file structure of the server, and any shares needed.

Anyone have any clue here? I cannot continue to recommend this product to small offices if I cannot get it to work.

Dear Bob,

I guess you have no Windows Vista in your network using Public ShareFolder. If you use still Windows Vista you have to update all computers to Public ShareFolder 1.4.

Otherwise it may help if you download the Public ShareFolder 1.3 again from our website and install it over you current installation on the server computer and on the clients. The settings on the server and clients are inherited.

Do you have followed also the description for Windows Server 2003 in our FAQ No 36 on this website?

Another thing may be, that the PST files of the clients which do not work are copies from the server PST file. Outlook identifies the PST files on the basis of an ID, which is copied if you copy a PST file in the file system.
If you use two PST files with the same ID in Outlook it gives an error by opening one of them (the other works) or it mirrors the content from the one into the other PST files.

A workaround is to create on the server a new PST file, change the default store to the new PST file, copying all folders to the new PST file (by drag and drop), try the connection from the clients to the new folder (unlock the PST file first in the PSF Server window) and if it works, remove the old PST file from the server's Outlook.

Kind regards

Dirk Eickhoff
